Stair carpet installation in the Charlotte Metro Area
Stairs are the loudest, slipperiest, and hardest-working part of any house. A properly installed carpeted stair runner or wall-to-wall carpet solves all three problems at once - quieter footsteps, softer landings if anyone slips, and a finish that hides the wear of daily traffic.
Floor Decor & More has carpeted staircases throughout the Charlotte Metro Area, from Matthews to the Waxhaw square. We handle layout, padding, tackless strips, and finishing details (waterfall vs. Hollywood wrap, French cap nosings, custom binding) so every stair lines up cleanly with no visible seams. If you'd rather keep the wood on show, our hardwood stairs team can walk you through that option too.

Wall-to-wall vs. stair runner - which is right?
Wall-to-wall carpet covers the full tread and riser. It's the warmest, quietest, and most pet-friendly option, and it's the easiest to keep clean because there are no exposed wood edges to scuff.
A stair runner shows off the wood on either side of the stairs and works beautifully on staircases with painted risers or open balusters. Runners are typically 27" or 32" wide with custom-bound edges in a matching or contrasting tape.
- Low-pile nylon - best durability for high-traffic stairs
- Wool or wool-blend runners - premium look, naturally stain-resistant
- Solution-dyed polyester - best for households with pets and kids
- Custom binding in 30+ colors to match your trim, sampled from the same carpet lines we install throughout the house

Why stair carpet outperforms hardwood for many homes
Hardwood stairs look stunning but they're slippery in socks, loud underfoot, and brutal on dropped phones. A quality carpet absorbs 22-35 decibels of impact noise, gives kids and older relatives a softer landing, and softens the morning trip to the kitchen in bare feet. If you have dogs that struggle with traction, carpeted stairs solve that overnight - no slippery scramble, no scratched nosings. It's also a popular middle ground for homeowners eyeing laminate stairs but not ready to give up the softness of carpet.

How we install carpet on stairs
We start by removing the old carpet, padding, staples, and tack strip and inspecting the wood underneath. Loose treads get re-screwed; squeaks get glued. Then we install fresh 8-pound rebond padding, tackless strips along each tread and riser, and stretch the carpet with a knee kicker and power stretcher so it stays tight for years. Every seam is heat-bonded - no visible joints, no fraying at the nosing.

Low-pile nylon and solution-dyed polyester. Both shrug off the constant friction stairs see. Avoid plush, deep-pile carpets - they crush quickly on the nosing.
Carpet hides them visually, but we fix them properly first. Every loose tread gets re-screwed and any open joints get glued before new carpet goes down.
Yes, as long as the treads are structurally sound. We protect the wood underneath so you can switch back to bare hardwood later if you want.
It's great for durability and looks, but skip Berber if you have cats. The loops snag easily on claws. We're happy to talk through fiber options at your free estimate if you're torn between a couple of choices.
