Why luxury vinyl makes sense on stairs
Vinyl is the only stair-friendly material that's fully waterproof, scratch-resistant, and quiet underfoot at the same time. For households with kids, pets, or basement stairs that see muddy shoes and groceries every day, it outlasts both hardwood and carpet without showing it - and unlike hardwood stairs, it's unbothered by humidity swings between a Piedmont summer and winter.
Floor Decor & More installs luxury vinyl plank (LVP) stairs throughout the Charlotte Metro Area, including out toward Fort Mill, SC, using the same plank you choose for the adjoining floor, so the staircase blends seamlessly into the room above and below.

Custom nosings - the detail that makes the staircase
Most LVP manufacturers don't ship matching stair nosings, which is why so many DIY vinyl stair jobs look like an afterthought. We solve that two ways: factory-color nosings when available, and custom-milled nosings cut from the same plank when they aren't. Either way, the front edge of every stair matches the tread exactly - no contrast strip, no aluminum trim, no gap.
- 20 mil and 30 mil wear layers - rated for commercial traffic
- Slip-resistant micro-textured surface
- Click-lock and glue-down installation methods
- Custom nosings milled to match any LVP brand we carry

Installation that won't squeak or peel
Vinyl stair installs fail in two ways: poor adhesion (planks lift at the nosing) or unprepared substrate (every step squeaks). We use polyurethane construction adhesive plus mechanical fasteners hidden behind the nosing, and we level every tread with skim coat before the plank goes down. The result is a staircase that feels as solid as hardwood with none of the maintenance - and if you'd rather compare it against laminate stairs or see our full lineup, our services page has the whole menu.

Modern LVP is embossed with a low-slip micro-texture rated for stair use. It's more slip-resistant than polyurethaned hardwood and similar to LVT in a commercial setting.
We remove the carpet, padding, staples, and tack strip first, then evaluate the treads. Solid wood treads get a quick level and the LVP goes on top. Particleboard or damaged treads get replaced.
Not when properly installed. We re-secure every tread and add construction adhesive before laying the plank, which actually makes the staircase quieter than it was before.
With a matching nosing - either a factory piece from the LVP manufacturer or one we mill in-house from the same plank. We never use a generic aluminum strip.
